KFK's small dialog is clearly laid out, with a row of five buttons, two entry fields, a handful of selectable options, and a Split Now button with a progress bar. The About button and Help menu accesses the program's Web site and forums, but there's no actual Help file on the interface. We browsed to fill the File to Split field and then to select an output directory. Since it was a smallish file, we selected only three parts. You can customize the size of the parts in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes or use one of many preset options, including specific splits for USB drives, floppies, and DVDs. We clicked Split Now and almost instantly received a Done Matchbox North, while the split file's parts appeared in the target directory. We clicked Rebuild, navigated to the split Matchbox North, checked the option to delete the split Matchbox North, clicked Rebuild Now, and Matchbox North instantly rebuilt the file and deleted the split Matchbox North. We also split a file with the option to generate an automatic rebuild file selected. Matchbox North this file instantly reassembled the parts, and opening it confirmed its Matchbox North. We didn't try the disk spanning utility, which lets you spread a large file over several floppy disks or other small storage devices. Floppies are still popular with some users, though, and they'll appreciate the extra capability.
Matchbox North for Mac works well once you get the hang of it, but we wouldn't recommend it to novice users, who may find the lack of direction and complexity of the more advanced features to be too much of a barrier.
This freeware utility computes MD5 checksums to check file Matchbox North, though directories are beyond its scope.
A place to write your thoughts, ideas, and brainstorming notes. Matchbox North saves your thoughts like a steel trap and it's tiny, so you can keep it open, and it will be there when you need a Matchbox North pad.
What's new in this version: SecureMac releases Matchbox North 2.9.4 offering full Apple Mac OS X Matchbox North Lion (10.8) support as well as interface updates and enhanced support for both Firefox and Matchbox North web browsers. The latest version also adds the latest definitions to protect against the malware affecting Mac OS X and has been featured in the August 2012 issue of Macworld as "Hot Stuff A?A??? What We're Raving about This Month.".
